Dashboard Confessional

October 12, 2010

I have heard Dashboard Confessional before, but I never took the time to listen to them properly, until I heard a song on the radio recently that I really liked.

Albums I listened to: The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most (a few songs); A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar; The Shade of Poison Trees (a few songs); Alter the Ending

Favourite songs: Get Me Right, Hey Girl, I Know About You, Even Now, Vindicated, The Motions, Bend and not Break

I must admit, I thoroughly enjoyed their last album (Alter the Ending) the most. I really enjoyed the whole album, and I thought that the acoustic versions were a great part of the album. They are really easy to listen to, and I really like them. I think I might have stumbled upon my new favourite album.

Would I listen to them again? Probably not all their albums unless it’s on shuffle, but I will most definitely listen to their Alter the Ending.

Editors

September 1, 2010

My sister-in-law told me about Editors quite a while ago after she listened to some of the music I have on my iPod. I’ve been listening to them quite a lot, but only because I’m not sure how I feel about them.

Albums I listened to: Don’t ask me how exactly this happened, but i have 1 song from The Back Room, a few songs from An End Has A Start (but not the whole album), and their song from the New Moon Soundtrack.

Favourite songs: All Sparks, Push Your Head Toward the Air, Bones, No Sound But the Wind

Their music isn’t bad. But then again, I don’t find it particularly amazing either. I’m kinda still in two minds as to whether or not I like them. I don’t find their music or the lyrics spectacularly earth shattering, and somehow it sounds quite amateurish (and somewhat South African in quality), but it was not horrible.

Would I listen to them again? Probably, but only as part of a playlist. I don’t think I will get this burning desire to pop some Editors on and just listen.

Band of Horses

July 8, 2010

Wow, so it’s been a while. Quite a while. Sadly, things have been very busy, so I have not been able to give my discovery of new music the attention it deserves. But I’m back, promise (not quite sure who I am making this promise to – does anyone read this thing?)

I decided I needed to venture into the beginning part of the alphabet, which is how I discovered Band Of Horses

Album I listened to: Everything All the Time

Favourite songs: The First Song (it is literally the first song), Monsters, I Go to the Barn Because I Like The, Monsters, The Funeral, Our Swords

Band of Horses is quite a cool band. I really like their music. I couldn’t work out what about them was familiar – turns out their music is very similar to The Shins (thanks Em), Vampire Weekend (love them), Mumford & Sons (must be the banjo) and Iron & Wine (just as chilled and easy listening). Band of Horses is very easy on the ear – I’m not sure if the lyrics are super deep or not, but that does not matter. They are just really cool to listen to.

Would I listen to them again? Yes, most definitely. And I would be interested to hear their later albums too.

Florence + The Machine

May 21, 2010

My friend Wendy put me on to Florence + The Machine the other day, and I can’t stop listening to them.

Album I listened to: Lungs

Favourite songs: Dog Days Are Over, Hardest of Hearts, Cosmic Life, You’ve Got The Love, Falling, Howl

Every time I think I have found this great new artist to add to our playlist at work, I find out it is already on there and I have actually heard their music before. I really like their music as it is a nice combination of various genres. With some artists, after a while it all sounds the same – I don’t get that feeling when I listen to them. I think it would be great to get listen to them live.

Would I listen to them again? Yes, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the follow up album.

Mumford & Sons

May 5, 2010

Mumford & Sons was suggested to me at after work drinks. I think I like them. A lot.

Album I listened to: Sigh No More

Favourite songs: Little Lion Man, The Cave, Dust Bowl Dance, After the Storm, Timshel, White Blank Page.

For some reason when I first listened to them, I thought of Cat Stevens and the Juno album. They have this pretty cool vibe going with the banjo (it happens to be the only instrument besides the guitar I am able to identify without help – sad, I know). The banjo doesn’t sound too country music, and the lyrics are pretty deep. They are simply awesome. Go listen to them. Now.

Would I listen to them again? Most definitely.

Justin Bieber

May 3, 2010

Yes, I know, I can’t believe it either. I actually listened to this crap that is giving people all over the world “Bieber fever“. (You will be happy to know that his fans are called Beliebers.)

Album I pretended to listen to: My World 2.0

So, I will concede that his music is catchy – I have caught myself on more than one occasion singing and bopping along to his music. Since the tune is normally what attracts me to a song, I decided to look at the lyrics on this one. As it turns out, he is one love sick puppy. After a brief scan of the lyrics of 6 of his 10 songs, I realised that they are all related to girls, love, soul mates and being hurt. Does he know he is 16? Does anyone take his lyrics (or even music) seriously? And by the way, when is his voice going to break? So I don’t like his girly voice and lady looks, but that just means that I’m not a Belieber.

Would I listen to this again? Not a chance. Sadly the radio stations have other ideas.

k’s Choice

April 28, 2010

So, my sister-in-law scolded me for not knowing who k’s Choice is. She’s being kind when she says it’s a “generational thing” (she’s only 3 years older than I am). I say it’s a “Saskia-knows-nothing-about-music” thing.

Album I listened to: Almost Happy

Favourite Songs: Almost Happy, Another Year, Busy, Home, Live For Real (I actually like this one for the lyrics more than just the tune).

When I first listened to k’s Choice, I started with the Intro – uh, scary folk song. Skip that one! The rest of the songs are a blend of chilled tunes and a few trying to be more upbeat, but overall it’s all good.

Will I listen to them again? Yes, why not. They are a rather chilled choice, but enjoyable. I’ll be adding them to my more chilled playlist.
